This month I’d like to talk to you about all natural deodorant…

We expect the temperatures to be soaring when the Summer finally makes an appearance. More and more people now prefer to stay in the UK and why not when often the temperatures are higher than most holiday hotspots? The need for a good deodorant is obvious but some alarming newspaper and magazine articles in recent years have suggested that aluminium salts present in under-arm deodorants and antiperspirants may contribute to the risk of breast cancer.

One report was based on a study published in the Journal of Applied Toxicology 2006.

The fact that deodorants containing these salts are applied and left on the skin so close to the breast tissue makes this a particular concern, especially after shaving when the skin is broken, making it potentially possible for aluminium salts to enter the bloodstream. Other studies have also suggested that aluminium salts can penetrate the skin even if it is unbroken.

Antiperspirants work by clogging, closing or blocking the pores that release sweat under your arms.  Aluminium salts, the active ingredient, is present  in many products. The salts act as a sweat inhibitor closing off the sweat pores.

It is not ideal to close off the body’s largest and most important secretory organ (sweating under the armpits included), particularly with a substance that can be irritating to the skin and is easily absorbed by damaged skin. Although many articles have been written on this subject, there appears to be no clear evidence to prove or disprove the link between aluminium salts and breast cancer.

Personally, I feel if there is any suggestion or doubt at all, why take the risk?
