Product spotlight: The ingredients that make Mellow’s Rose Geranium Body Butter so special

The weather in February can be horribly unpredictable and tough on our skin. At the same time, we’re starting to turn our thoughts to the spring, to throwing off our winter layers and enjoying the promise of sunshine.

With this in mind, I thought I’d cast the spotlight in this week’s blog on one of our most popular products, our nourishing and soothing Mellow Rose Geranium Body Butter.

Body Butter

What is body butter?
Body butter is a rich moisturising ‘butter’ that is great for cell rejuvenation and helps protect your skin from the sun. It’s also ideal for people with very dry skin, particularly during the winter months. You should not use body butter on your face.

Thanks to its wonderful fragrance and luxurious texture, Rose Geranium Body Butter delights the senses, particularly smell and touch.

The fats in the body butter are partially absorbed by your skin, thus producing some excellent softening and nourishing properties.

What ingredients do we use in Mellow Body Butter?
I personally choose every ingredient used in Mellow Skincare products. Below, I’ve listed the ingredients in Mellow body butter and why they’re so good for your skin:

  • Avocado butter (Persea gratissima)

Avocado butter is produced from avocado pulp, and is mild, nourishing and excellent for dry skin. Avocado originated in the Americas, and was well known by the Aztecs who used it for ailments and also to protect their skin from the parching, hot, dry winds of the region. Legend states avocado is also used on hair to promote its growth.

The most famous use of avocado is in Mexican guacamole. The oil comes from the oily flesh. The Conquistadors of Spain brought the fruit to Europe.

It is suggested that it might well be beneficial for women with post-menopausal skin prone to premature ageing.

  • Coconut butter (Cocos nucifera)

Coconut butter is extracted from coconuts on palm trees in Asia, which grow to a height of 20-25 metres.

Coconut is used in a lot of cooking and has a neutral flavour with a buttery texture. Coconut butter makes a good substitute for butter and is an excellent vegan alternative. In the Philippines and Fiji it is the main cooking oil.

The name ‘coconut’ is said to derive from the Portuguese word ‘coquo’ meaning a ‘goat kid’!

When used on the skin, coconut softens and moisturises. It is also used in the making of ‘Monoi’ and, in certain countries, the pulp is used as a balm to stimulate hair growth.

  • Shea butter (Butyrospermum parkii)

Shea butter is wonderful for dry and damaged skin; it has healing properties and is known to be active in stimulating the formation and growth of new cells. It is also anti-inflammatory.

This ingredient is made from the stones of the organic fruit of the Shea butter tree, which grows wild in West Africa. It was introduced to Europe by legendary explorer, Mungo Park.

Shea butter can be used as a cooking oil.

A tree of the wide savannahs, it is particularly associated with Mali and Burkina Faso. The Mali people use it to treat sprains and muscular pain and its anti-inflammatory properties make it a good base for anti-rheumatic treatments.

  • Vitamin E (Tocopherol)

Vitamin E is an antioxidant. This makes is a classic anti-wrinkle ingredient in skincare products that helps to reproduce new cells and protects against the destruction of the connective tissue caused by free radicals.

  • Vitamin A (Palmitate)

Vitamin A is known to be nourishing, protecting and anti-inflammatory, especially for dry and mature skin. As well as nourishing the skin, it counteracts inflammations and protects cell membranes from the damage caused by free radicals.

  • Rose Geranium essential oil (Pelargonium graveolens)

Rose Geranium is a hormone-balancing essential oil. The flowers hail from Egypt and are sometimes used to restore a loss of smell. Rose Geranium oil is used holistically to unblock creativity whilst grounding people who need it.

This essential oil can help with depression and nervous tension. It stimulates and cleanses the sinuses, and is useful in treating menopausal symptoms.

Rose Geranium Body Butter comes from the Rose Geranium Mellow range.
