It seems like almost every month there is another hallmark occasion that needs to be recognised with cards, flowers, gifts and good cheer: Birthdays, Valentine’s Day, Easter and so on.

The florists and chocolatiers are certainly happy on these occasions and I have often been guilty of feeling it’s all got commercialised, and the real meaning can get lost.

I don’t mean to be cynical, after all I have a business which lends itself very nicely to these special occasions.

However, I do think Mother’s Day is one of those celebrations that we should take time out of our busy lives to recognise.

After all, we all have (or have had) a mother and without her, we would not be here would we?

  • Small children love it because maybe they are allowed to prepare mum breakfast in bed or give her gifts they have made themselves.
  • It can be an excuse to spoil your mum for the day by cooking for her or taking her out for lunch. Maybe a treat at a Spa for a pamper just for her.
  • It can also be a reflective or sad day if our mums are no longer with us.

Whatever our particular situation, I think it’s a day worth remembering. Everyone’s situation is different but our mothers, in one way or another have moulded us into the people we are now.

It doesn’t matter what part of the world you are in, or what culture you belong to, honouring your mum on Mother’s Day is one of the greatest gifts you can give her.

So don’t forget the 6th of March. If you are a mum yourself, I hope you get some treats and feel special. Otherwise, mark the day to honour mums past and present.
