“Is your back letting you down?”

Most of us look forward all year to our Summer holidays, especially if we are going to sunnier climes.

  • We’ve tended to our feet in preparation for the sandals.
  • We’ve buffed, waxed and smoothed our legs and arms ready for the sun…
  • but how many of us include our back in the daily routine?

Think about it – it’s been covered up most of the year so it definitely deserves all the year round attention.

Spotty or flaky skins in this area is common because even when we are dry brushing to exfoliate, it can be difficult to reach.

If you suffer from spotty skin on your back, your reaction is probably to cover it up when actually it would be much better to expose it to get the air circulating.

The chances are, you may have the same problem on your face so hormonal changes and maybe stress can be a factor but that’s not always the case because if this area is always covered, the pores can get blocked with perspiration causing blemishes.

One to try:

  • Blend 1 drop of camphor essential oil, 1 drop of lemon and 1 drop of lavender essential oil in 6 drops of evening primrose oil.
  • Apply as required.
  • If you have oily skin and you use regular clay masks, there is no reason why you can’t use it on your back as well.

In contrast, the skin on your back may be dry and flaky.

On a previous Mellow Skincare blog post, I’ve described how dry body brushing before your daily shower is perfect for preparing your skin for the Summer. It really gets the circulation going – but if this is a shock to the system, you can also use an exfoliating body scrub which loosens all the dead skin cells, which you can then shower off.

You need to treat it the same as the skin on your face so after the shower or bath, it is important to moisturise with a nourishing moisturiser or body oil.

As before, if you use a nourishing mask on your face, there is no reason why you couldn’t apply this to your back as well.

In conclusion, I think the most common worry for many of us is the fact that our skins are probably lily white having been covered up all winter but there are so many products out there nowadays to give you a tan, there is no longer an excuse to neglect it!

Enjoy your holiday!
